MOFA/JICA Celebrate Local Rice Promotion
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have celebrated the gains of the Rice Promotional Event of the Sustainable Rain-Fed Low Land Rice production project, introduced in the Ahafo Ano North District in 2009.
Ghana: Akumadan Irrigation Facility Inaugurated
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) in collaboration with South Korean Government has inaugurated a 2.2 million dollars Tomato Expansion Irrigation Project, at Akumadan in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti which was successfully implemented by the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRCC). The project which was undertaken by the Korean Rural Community Corporation in 2011, seeks to improve irrigation system in the Akumadan area, by installing modern irrigation facilities and constructing supportive building, with the purpose of enabling all-year-round tomato production.
Work on Longoro Irrigation Project to Begin Soon - Minister
Mr. Clement Kofi Humado, Minister for Agriculture, has disclosed that plans are afoot for the completion of the New Longoro Irrigation Scheme located in the Kintampo North District in the Brong Ahafo Region. According to him budgetary allocations had been made in the government's 2014 Budget Statement and Economic Policy which is expected to presented to Parliament on November 19 to finance the project.
Suicide Cases on Rise with Farmers
A professor at the University of Queensland and Senior Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Asafu Adjaye has stated that suicide among farmers in Ghana would increase. Mr. Adjaye was speaking to CITY & BUSINESS GUIDE in an interview after the launch of the Ghana Policy Journal (GPJ) in Accra.

75 per cent of Women Farmers have no Land
A research conducted by Action Aid Ghana (AAG) reveals that about 75 per cent of women smallholder farmers do not have access to secured land for farming. The research disclosed that women also lack agriculture extension services and farming inputs like tractor services and seed, while only 13 per cent of women earn income.

The poverty profile in Ghana has raised a lot of concern among the populace of the country. The Ghana Living Standards Survey (GLSS-4) in 2005/2006, revealed that about 28.5% of the populace are poor. The United Nations, in 2002, came out with a Millennium Declaration which aimed at addressing global poverty. It contained eight development goals that has come to be known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This research focused on the probability of attaining those goals in Ghana by 2015, after implementing various poverty reduction programs. The research was an investigative one based on data throughout Ghana.
An Assessment of the Influence of Cooperative Marketing Associations on Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria

The paper examined the contributions of cooperative marketing associations as a socio-economic institution towards poverty reduction, wealth creation, employment generation, skill acquisition, and better standard of living. It discussed various successive governments’ initiatives formulated towards making the citizens to be self-reliant and employers of labour rather than job-seekers. Emphasizing on the relevance of cooperative societies, the author drew analysis on the contributions of the SMEs on economic growth of some foreign countries. The paper concluded by recommending among others formulation of policies to sustain and strengthen grouped- based associations, provision of infrastructural facilities, tax holiday, enabling business environment, and government involvement and encouragement on back- to -land agriculture businesses.
