Agriculture Conference Focuses on Africa-Owned Science
Agriculture experts are gathered in Accra, Ghana for the 6th Africa Agriculture Science Week. The event is sponsored by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, FARA. The theme of the conference is “Africa Feeding Africa through Agricultural Science and Innovation.” Members of FARA said the focus is on home-grown solutions to ensure food security on the continent, while making agricultural research and development a priority. CGIAR Consortium Well-represented at Africa Agriculture Science Week
Africa feeding Africa through Agricultural Science and Innovation is this year’s theme at the 6th Africa Agriculture Science Week (AASW) which kicks off on the 15th of July, 2013 in Accra, Ghana. More than 1,000 attendees are expected to convene to discuss the role of agricultural science and innovation in finding and strengthening local solutions to the urgent food security challenges in Africa. Ghana is Making Progress
President John Mahama says, Ghana has made significant progress in the various sectors of the economy particularly in the areas of education, health, agriculture and infrastructural development. He said the country has increased supply of potable drinking water from about 40 per cent to almost 70 per cent, adding that enrolment of school children into schools has also increased to about 90 per cent in recent times. Rural Growth Programme Transforms Agriculture
Agriculture has over the years been noted as the backbone of Ghana’s economy. More than 50 per cent of the country’s labour force is estimated to be in the agricultural sector, as indicated by the 2000 Population and Housing Census. In spite of this, many farmers in Ghana remain poor, especially in northern Ghana, which boasts boundless agricultural potential. Mrs Rhoda Peace Tumusiime, Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, African Union Commission (AUC), who made the call, said such partnerships were critical to ensure that farmers were well equipped with the right farming practices, through technological innovation, storage and market accessibility.
