Contributions of Fairtrade to the cocoa industry in Ghana

A report published by Reuters Television revealed Ghana produces 14% of the total production of the world's cocoa. In spite of this glowing achievement cocoa farmers receive a very little percentage of the revenue generated by chocolate manufacturing companies across the globe through the sales of chocolate bars (Reuters 2009). An International Cocoa Organization (ICO) reports also revealed that West African farmers, supply 70 percent of all cocoa to feed the chocolate industry worldwide.
Economist adjudges cocoa Ghana's largest foreign exchange earner

Accra, Feb. 16, GNA - An Economist on Tuesday adjudged cocoa as Ghana's largest foreign exchange earner contrary to economic indices, which label gold as such.
"In 2009, while gold earned the nation 2.98 billion dollars, what came into the economy in terms of taxes, royalties, consumables, payments for workers came to 668 million dollars, that is, only 22 per cent," Dr Kwadwo Tutu, Senior Economist at the Institute of Economic Affairs stated in Accra.
Government commends SIF on efforts to reduce poverty in Ghana

Accra, Feb. 16, GNA - Government has commended Social Investment Fund (SIF) for its immense contribution to capacity building and logistical support to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to promote poverty reduction in the country.
Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development who made the commendation said government viewed SIF as a strategic institution playing key roles towards achieving poverty reduction.
This was contained in a speech read on his behalf at a Mid-Term Validation Workshop on Urban Poverty Reduction Project (UPRP) in Accra on Wednesday.
Block Farm Project receives GH¢134766 | Ghanaian Chronicle

CONTRARY TO reports that there was no money to pay rice farmers under the Block Farm Project in the Kasena-Nankani area of the Upper East Region, resulting in their crops being locked up in silos at Tono near Navrongo, the Coordinator of the project, Mr. Emmanuel Akuna, has assured the farmers that there was enough money to pay them.
