Sources of Competitiveness and Regional Trade
Tomato is an important cash crop in the northern region. Attempts to develop processing plants in the north have failed. A study to examine the reasons for failure was conducted last year. The farmers are losing the consumers’ market as well, as traders are importing tomatoes from Burkina Faso. They claim the reason is the superior quality of tomatoes produced in Burkina Faso.
This activity builds on a survey of production practices in the Upper East region of Ghana and in Burkina Faso. The analysis focuses on examining the sources of comparative advantage, if any, for tomato producers in Burkina Faso and the factors driving tomato trade.
